For those of you who have never seen a ramp, here’s some background. A ramp is an incline on the side of a hill that starts at ground level and ends at another spot (usually higher) with smooth slope to make it easier for athletes participating in road races, figure skating or speedskating competitions to skate down. There are two ways ramps usually go: straight up from ground level towards their destination or sloping gently uphill. That being said, which way do ramp arrows go?

The “ramp arrow direction architecture” is a question that has been asked by many people. The answer to the question is that ramp arrows go up or down, depending on whether they are pointing left or right.

Obtaining the Slope

Divide the ramp’s length by its height. The second figure in your ratio will be this. One is always the first number. If the ramp is 12 feet long and the rise is 2 feet, you would divide 12 by 2 to obtain 6, resulting in a 1 to 6 ratio.
