The MLB All-Star Game is an annual exhibition baseball game hosted by Major League Baseball (MLB) that features some of the best players from the American League and the National League. It is held during the All-Star break period in July and is considered one of the highlights of the MLB season. In 2022, the MLB All-Star Game will be held at the Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia. Throughout this piece, we will provide an overview of the MLB All-Star Game format and its history.
History Of MLB All-Star Game
The Major League Baseball All-Star Game, also known as the “Midsummer Classic”, is an annual professional baseball game sanctioned by the Major League Baseball (MLB) and contested between all-stars from the American League (AL) and National League (NL). The first All-Star Game was held in 1933 in Chicago at Comiskey Park. Since then, the game has been held every summer across various major league ballparks.
In recent years, the teams have been divided into two leagues (such as slugging percentage for batters or ERA for pitchers). Home field advantage for each season’s World Series is determined by a rotating arrangement—the American league has had home field advantage eleven times from 2003 to 2018: 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 2011 2013 2015 2017 2019.
Each team will use a roster of 32 players—one manager per team plus nine pitchers and 13 position players that are named to their respective teams through fan ballot selection process. Fan balloting remains a popular way for fans to vote for their favourite players on each team but since 2002 winning players have become more adept at receiving votes on statutory ballots. The most prolific winner was Yankee Icon Lou Gehrig with eight starts including 1935 when he set the record of four consecutive All Star appearances that stood until 1983 when Cal Ripken won five straight starting nods.
The MLB All-Star Game will be hosted by Colorado’s Coors Field in Denver in 2022 marking its fourth time hosting since 1995 when it led off games were played at Mile High Stadium.
MLB All-Star Game Format
The Major League Baseball All-Star Game has been held every summer since 1933. The game pits the best players from the National League against the best from the American League. Every MLB team is represented by at least one player, so fans get to see all their favourite stars in action and cheer on their home team’s All-Stars. The game also features one of the most exciting and competitive Home Run Derby competitions that takes place prior to the actual game.
The MLB All-Star Game format includes four (4) rounds of regular play with three (3) innings each. Each team sends nine (9) batters to the plate in each inning with a designated hitter serving as a tenth (10th) batter for both teams each inning. After four full rounds of regular play, each team has 18 batters taking eight (8) turns at bat in all with two turns per round of play. If there is a tie at this point, a complete inning or more is then played until an advantage can be gained or exhaustion sets in and a winner is declared by majority vote of those present, if necessary.
The 72nd annual MLB All-Star Game will take place on July 13th, 2022 at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio; it will be hosted by the Cleveland Indians baseball club organisation. Tickets and further information about activities surrounding this event will become available closer to this date on MLB’s official website and other ticket outlets around respective cities or states nearby.

MLB All-Star Game Events
The MLB All-Star Game is an annual exhibition game held by Major League Baseball (MLB) which pits the best players from the American League against the best players from the National League. The MLB All-Star Game is a major event, with fun activities and a variety of events held throughout the week. In this article, we’ll explore the different events and activities taking place during the All-Star Game, as well as where the 2022 MLB All-Star Game will be held.
Home Run Derby
The Home Run Derby is usually the first event of All-Star Week and the most popular among fans, featuring the biggest sluggers from each MLB team. Pitchers aren’t included in this event, leaving it open only to hitters. In the Home Run Derby, batters have five minutes per turn and attempt to hit as many home runs as possible before time expires. The hitters are given four “outs” each round – meaning they can up to four swings before their time runs out. If a batter hits a fair ball that does not leave the field of play, they may still continue batting until they reach their outs or time has run out.
The hitter with the most home runs at the end of each round advances, until two finalists remain. The final round is a three-minute sudden death shootout between these players where time will only expire once both players have had an equal number of turns and one has been declared victor by virtue of having hit more home runs. Seeds are determined by total home runs for all active MLB players on July 2nd prior to All Star Week, but participants may be adjusted based on injury or availability issues closer to game day.
All-Star Futures Game
The All-Star Futures Game is an exhibition Major League Baseball game played each year since 1999. The game pits a team of Minor League prospects from the United States against a team of prospects from other countries around the world. It typically takes place on the Sunday before the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, and is held at a major league stadium in the same city as the Midsummer Classic. Players who have appeared in the All-Star Futures Game include Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, Buster Posey, Stephen Strasburg and Manny Machado.
The 2021 All-Star Futures Game will take place on July 11th in Atlanta, Georgia as part of MLB’s all-star festivities. The 2022 All-Star Futures Game has not yet been announced but it is expected to be held at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
Celebrity Softball Game
The Celebrity Softball Game is always a highlight of the All-Star festivities that revolve around the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Players from all corners of the entertainment industry take part in this annual excitement including actors, musicians, and other professional athletes. The game takes place on Sunday prior to the main event, making it a great way to get fans into the weekend spirit. In 2021, the Celebrity Softball Game will be held as part of All-Star Weekend at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia. It remains to be seen who will make an appearance in 2022 when it changes location to Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California.
All-Star Legends and Celebrity Softball Game
The All-Star Legends and Celebrity Softball Game is an exhibition traditionally held on the Sunday before the MLB All-Star Game. It features current and former Major League Baseball players, as well as celebrity guests from television, film, art, music and other signs of pop culture. The first Celebrity Softball Game was part of the 1954 All-Star festivities in Cleveland.
This event starts with a celebrity home run derby featuring eight four-man teams selected by various members of MLB organisations, including players and coaches. The celebrity participants then split up into two teams for a six inning softball game. In recent years, Big League Stew has sponsored the Legends & Celebrity Softball game with some new rules to make it an even more fun experience for fans.
In addition to being good sources of entertainment and raising awareness for baseball around the world, this event also helps raise money for local charities in the host city of each year’s All-Star game. The 2020 MLB All-Star Legends & Celebrity Softball Game was held at Los Angeles Angels’ Tempe Diablo Stadium on Sunday night before the annual Midsummer Classic in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. In 2021, fans will head to Atlanta’s Truist Park on Sunday night to watch this great event prior to Tuesday night’s main event at Truist Park itself – marking only the second time ever that these two games have been held in one venue over consecutive days. And in 2022, Denver Coors Field will be hosting this amazing match up!
MLB All-Star Game Rules
The Major League Baseball All-Star Game is an annual event played between the National League and American League teams. The exhibition game is held mid-season and showcases some of the best players in the Major Leagues. The rules of the game are unique compared to the regular season games, so let’s look at the specifics.
Length of Game
The length of the MLB All-Star Game varies from year to year. Though it is traditionally a nine-inning game, decisions by the Major League Baseball Commissioner can change or modify this rule. In recent years, for instance, games have been decided after 11 innings in order to avoid prolonging the event and give players more rest before the next season.
Apart from deciding how long each inning should last, there are also specific rules regarding pitching changes and on-field substitutions. These details will be specified in the GB Commissioner’s Official Rulebook prior to each All Star game, but generally it is not allowed for pitchers and players to leave the game in mid-inning without being replaced by another active MLB player. In addition, if a game is tied after nine innings of play, extra innings will be added at the discretion of the MLB Commissioner until a winning team is determined. During these extra innings periods, teams may bring in new pitchers or position players as they wish.
Designated Hitter Rule
The Designated Hitter Rule is an important part of the all-star game. It is an additional player who acts as an extra hitter for the team’s pitchers. The designated hitter does not have to play defence for a team and is used only for batting. The rule was adopted in 1973, although it has gone through several modifications over the years. In 2010, the American League adopted the permanent use of a designated hitter, which is now part of Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game format.
A special DH Rule for Interleague games was added in 2017 that gave the League hosting Interleague Games (either AL or NL) full control over when to use its Designated Hitter – whether that involves both teams using their own DH (AL vs NL), or having no DH at all if so desired by either team (NL vs NL or AL vs AL).
As of 2019, a National League All-Star Team with no designated hitter position can add a 10th pitcher to their roster on Day 1 and remove one position player should they choose upon arrival on Day 2. As of 2021, with the 2022 MLB All-Star Game set to be played in PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, it has been officially announced that there will be no designated hitter utilised at this event per league rules.
Extra Innings
In the event that the 2022 MLB All-Star Game remains tied after nine innings, extra innings will be played until there is a winner. The league that wins the coin toss prior to the start of the game will choose whether their team will bat or take the field first in extra innings. In each subsequent inning, teams will switch sides and swap between batting and taking the field.
The 10th inning and beyond consists of one additional rule: each half-inning begins with a runner on second base. This runner will be the player who was scheduled to lead off that particular half-inning; they are placed on second base so as to maximise scoring opportunities and ensure that there is no stalemate during an extended period of extra innings. The insertion of this designated runner ensures a more rapid resolution without dramatically changing play strategies within each half inning.
MLB All-Star Game Highlights
The MLB All-Star Game is one of the most exciting sporting events in North America. It features the best players in the league fighting it out to be the best in their respective position. This year, the All-Star Game will be held in Atlanta, Georgia at Truist Park. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights of this year’s All-Star game and what you can expect to see when it takes place.
Most Valuable Player Award
The Most Valuable Player Award of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, (or MLB All-Star Game) is an annual tradition in American professional baseball that dates back to 1933. In each year’s contest, commemorative awards are presented to the players who have excelled in all facets of the game — offence and defence — during their previous seasons, as well as during that year’s all-star game.
Nominees for this award are announced prior to each all-star game, and voting is conducted by members of the media who cover Major League Baseball. The Most Valuable Player Award winner is selected in a public vote after the conclusion of the all-star game by a panel of two dozen experts from MLB and its associated media outlets — this includes writers, broadcasters and former MVPs. The panel encompasses a variety of outlets representative of diverse views from across MLB’s national landscape.
In cases where no position player has stood out as most valuable over other contenders, relief pitchers can be honoured with this award. However, pitchers rarely win this award as relative to position players; since 1933 only five All Star relief pitchers have won the MVP title: Rollie Fingers (1981), Willie Hernandez (1984), Steve Austin (1999), Guillermo Mota (2007) and Mariano Rivera (2013). For 2022 the 82nd edition for MLB All -Star Game will be hosted at Dodger Stadium on July 13th.
All-Star Game Records
The All-Star Game has some of the most distinctive records among Major League Baseball events. Of all All-Star Games where an individual record was set, the greatest number were set in the 2001 game at Safeco Field in Seattle. That game holds more records than any other All-Star Game, including both the highest and lowest nine-inning score (19–6) and most runs scored by a single team (19).
Since 1933, five players have been honoured with Most Valuable Player Awards for outstanding performances as part of their All-Star Game selections. No player has ever won multiple MVP Awards for their All-Star Game performance, but two of those awards did go to Hall of Famers: Frank Robinson in 1971 and Cal Ripken Jr. in 2001. There have been 11 perfect innings thrown during All-Star Games since 2009, with 33 strikeouts total between those innings. Additionally, 11 players have gone 4-for-4 or better at bats during the event’s history.
MLB will be holding the 2022 All Star Game on July 12th at Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium. This will mark MLB’s fourth time hosting an All Star game at this venue since 1973 when it first opened its doors to a Midsummer Classic home run derby that went on between Hank Aaron and Willie Mays which ended up setting a new record that day for longest home run derby ever played in MLB history (lasting for about 28 minutes).
Most Memorable Moments
The Major League Baseball All-Star Game is an annual event that honours the best of the best in the MLB. Throughout its history, there have been some truly memorable moments that people will never forget. Here are some of the most iconic and remarkable memories from this celebrated event:
• In 1941 Ted Williams hit a home run off of Chicago Cubs pitcher Claude Passeau in the bottom of the 9th inning. This home run provided a walk-off win for the American League in what would be dubbed “The Williams Game”.
• Another iconic moment came in 1947 when Joe DiMaggio went 5-for-5 during his first All-Star appearance – something no other player has achieved since then.
• In 1951, Willie Mays became one of five players ever to hit an inside-the-park home run during an All-Star Game and initially thought the game had been tied at 4 runs each until his teammates reminded him he had yet to complete his home run trot.
• In 1962, Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays hit back to back homers off of Gibson’s offering, cementing their position as two of baseball’s greatest legends.
• 1993 saw one enormous upset due to Yankees great Wade Boggs driving in two runs in extra innings off Dodgers legend Orel Hershisher for a 3–1 victory for the American League following a tie ballgame late into extra innings.
• The Home Run Derby is always a major draw at every All Star event and no year was better than 2002 when Luis González won by hitting only 6 homers compared to runner up Barry Bonds with 5 slams despite having just 20 seconds per swing due to time constraints.
• Lastly, after 15 innings – a record setting length – Justin Verlander provided momentum for another American League Victory throwing over 140 pitches against his National League counterparts ending with score tied 7–7 until Fielder brought it down with another walkoff homerun putting AL on top 8–7 ending what could go down as one of baseball’s greatest matchups favourably remembered by all across America and beyond taking place on July 16th ensuring that year’s All Star game memories will last a lifetime. This means that the 2022 MLB All Star Game will take place on July 14th at Atlanta Braves Suntrust Park.
